Why Camera Stabilizer ?

Generally speaking, shaky visual images tend to make people feel fidget, tired, dizzy or repulsive, while stable and smooth visual images provide pleasant entertainment. The picture stability is particularly relevant for productions incorporating multi-layered compositing special effects. Image weave, compounded by noise, is the enemy of all compression algorithms. The emergence of highly compressed MPEG-based delivery systems, including DVD and digital transmission using multiple GOPs (Group of Pictures) calls for a high level of picture stability to maintain picture quality and here digital acquisition is a major boon
Traditionally, dolly, crane jibs or steadying devices are used to reduce the shaky and unsteady motion in shooting. Steady devices or stabilizers are favored because of its great flexibility, convenience and capability of shooting more intricate actions.

Successful Examples

Stabilizer was first invented by Garrett Brown, a photographer and inventor, in 1970s. It has become the most important equipment in filmmaking and TV productions. Since its first appearance in the making of Rocky ,there have emerged numerous movies worldwide, in the making of which stabilizers are utilized, Run Lola Run, Russian Ark,Irreversible.
The demand for stabilizers is increasing rapidly because they are now widely used in Tv program production from shooting stadium to big sports events.

FAQ
How does a stabilizer work?
A stabilizer is comprised of the arm, the sled, and the vest. The spring of the arm separates the operator from the camera so that the spring can absorb the vibration and shakiness caused in shooting, thus reduce the camera's bumpy motions. The sled can effectively reduce the fore and to or side to side bumps and vibration. The vest ( or the car-carried support) is the supporting gear for the stabilizer.

What kind of stabilizer to choose?
The choice of stabilizer is mainly determined by the weight of the camera and its accessories. Generally, very stabilizer has its own load capacity range specification. The user should choose one that matches the weight of his camera.

What to do with a light camera?
It is easy to adjust the balance when the weight of the camera is within the load capacity of the stabilizer. If the camera is too light, balance can be achieved through adding weight blocks to the mounting stage. As for the stabilizer itself, the lighter, the better.
